I recently had the great pleasure to be interviewed on the Countrystride podcast about Hugh Walpole’s life and works, especially about Hugh’s time spent living in the Lake District.
The Countrystride Podcast celebrates the landscapes, culture, heritage and people of Cumbria and the Lake District through a unique blend of immersive field recordings, inspiring commentary and interviews, all shaped into a single walk presented by author, illustrator and ex-farmer Mark Richards and produced by David Felton.
We took a walk (and scramble) up Hugh Walpole’s favourite Cumbrian fell, Catbells, rising to it’s summit and finishing the walk at the memorial plaque and bench overlooking his former home Brackenburn on the shores of Derwentwater.
You can listen to the podcast episode below. Visit the Countrystride website for more wonderful episodes and information about their guidebooks.
We hope you’ll follow in our footsteps and take the Catbells walk yourself the next time you’re in the Lake District!
I’m a Cumbrian and a big fan of Countrystride, and so was interested to hear your talk on Hugh Walpole. Although I was aware of the “Rogue Herries” series, I’d never had a reason to pick up one, thinking they were old stuffy books from long ago, but your talk prompted me to get Book 1, and I have barely put it down since. I have a feeling I’ll end up getting the whole series. THANK YOU for turning me on to a very gifted writer, who thanks to you I am really only now learning about. Great website too!
Hi Andrew
Mission accomplished! Great to hear you’ve discovered Walpole’s work and are enjoying the Herries series – you can pick them up for next to nothing on Ebay and there are plenty of them out there. Thank you for the kind words about the website too, I’m revamping the audiobook section this weekend and have much more to come about Hugh’s life. Appreciate the comments – enjoy! Best wishes, Simon
